Health Systems 20/20 is working with the Egyptian Ministry of Health (MOH) on Egypt's fourth round of National Health Accounts (NHA) estimates to capture public, private, and donor contributions, in addition to examining overall health care expenditures.

Leadership and management training is an essential ingredient in any strategy aimed at bringing about organizational change to strengthen health services. Health Systems 20/20, in collaboration with the Egyptian Ministry of Health (MOH), recently announced plans to establish a “Leadership Academy” as a sustainable Egyptian institution to build management capacities within the public health care system. Leading MOH officials and health experts gathered in Cairo in January for an orientation session to launch plans for the Academy.

Health Systems 20/20 had the honor of hosting the Honorable Dr. Remi Allah Kouadio, Minister of Health and Public Hygiene of the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire and his delegation, April 28, 2009, in the Bethesda office.

One of the key challenges facing the Ministry of Health (MOH) in its reform efforts is ensuring that Egypt has the right human capacities and workforce in place to roll out and sustain reforms.

To address this issue, the MOH and Health Systems 20/20 brought together providers from MOH hospitals, university professors, and MOH representatives for a four-day “Expert Opinion Workshop for Setting Hospital Workforce Standards” in March 2009 to reach consensus on a series of workforce standards for hospitals.

As part of an effort to upgrade the leadership and management skills in the Egyptian public health care sector, Health Systems 20/20, in collaboration with the Egyptian Ministry of Health (MOH), hosted the first Leadership Café meeting April 25, 2009, with guest speaker Dr. Nancy Kane, Professor of Management and Associate Dean for Educational Programs, Harvard School of Public Health.

His Excellency (H.E.), the Minister of Health, Prof. Dr. Hatem El Gabaly, defined NHA as a key tool in improving the effectiveness of health systems to achieve Egypt’s health reform objectives in opening a two-day NHA workshop in Cairo March 31-April 1.

Speaking at the March 27th launch of the third round of National Health Accounts (NHA) in Kenya, the Honorable Prof Anyang’ Nyong’o, Minister of Medical Services, noted that although household expenditure on health services in Kenya has declined, the current levels are too high and present a barrier to accessing health care services for poor households. “I will raise this issue with the government to ensure that more resources are allocated to the health sector and we are seen to be moving towards the Abuja target” stated the Minister.

With funding from the President's Emergency Plan to Fight AIDS (PEPFAR) and support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Health Systems 20/20 project is working with the Ivorian Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene (MOH) to build human resources for health (HRH) numbers and management at all levels of the health care system.
